Mini Traction Machine-Electricity
A ball-on-disc instrument for measuring the frictional properties of lubricated and unlubricated contacts under an applied electrical potential, and a wide range of rolling and sliding conditions.
Applications:
- Investigations into parasitic and stray electric currents within drive transmissions of electric vehicles.
- Transmission efficiency and lifetime investigations.
- Renewable power generation.
- Effects of electrostatic discharge on wear and fatigue failure.
- Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) investigations.
Principle and Contact Schematic:
Specimens are fitted to the instrument and a small sample of lubricant is added to the pot. The ball is loaded against the face of the disc and both specimens are driven independently. Frictional forces between the specimens and average measurements of both current and voltage are captured automatically throughtout the test, and the user can attach their own oscilloscope to capture the raw data at high sampling rates.
The user has the freedom to choose their own power supply setup for applying a potential across the contact as long as it is within the specification limits for the measurement range.
Results:
The standard MTM test profile consisting of the range of speeds, temperatures and loads will now also include control of the electrical systems for the MTM-EC.
The MTM-EC automatically runs through the sequence of profile steps, recording data without any intervention by the user. Data is displayed graphically in real time and is available after the test for in-depth analysis and comparison between samples.
